Dorcas Mbugua's journey to becoming a respected legal professional began when she migrated to Australia in 2007 as an international student. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, she pursued and completed a Bachelor of Media, Bachelor of Laws, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the University of Adelaide (now Adelaide University).
A champion for workers' rights
Upon the completion of her studies, Dorcas embarked on her legal career, initially specialising in employment law. She passionately represented workers across various vital sectors, including the health industry (disability and aged care, both private and government institutions), childcare, and the Australian public sector.
Her extensive role involved:
1. Providing expert advice and attending disciplinary meetings.
2. Thoroughly investigating underpayment of wages claims.
3. Facilitating conciliation conferences and drafting Collective Bargaining Agreements.
4. Negotiating fair and just outcomes for her clients, often through strategic litigation.
Leading in media, entertainment and arts law
Dorcas later transitioned to the dynamic Media, Entertainment and Arts sector, taking on an exciting role representing journalists, actors (including those from iconic shows like Home & Away and Neighbours), writers, and performers. Her dedication and expertise led to her becoming the Deputy Director of the legal team at the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance. She held this influential position until her resignation in 2020, when she relocated back to Kenya.
